TotalEnergies is a multinational integrated energy company with the goal to be net zero by 2050. This requires a big shift in culture and operations, and the company is taking a data-driven approach.
The first step was to identify a cost-effective, scalable digital solution to enable teams to measure greenhouse gas emissions across the portfolio.
They faced the following challenges:
- Numerous teams were involved in monitoring emissions, yet they were not using the same source information.
- No standardized approach to accessing, analyzing, and acting upon the information.
- Calculations were often duplicated, and not always shared, leading to analytical inconsistencies.
A longtime user of AVEVA software, TotalEnergies sought to optimize operations using AVEVA’s trusted capabilities.
Most of our sites are using [AVEVA] PI System, so most of the data is already available. [However, we were not really using it] properly to monitor the emissions, and this is why we decided to use [the asset framework function of AVEVA PI System] to design the proper templates to help them to monitor efficiently the emissions.
Centralized insight brings clarity
TotalEnergies built a robust centralized intelligence platform, founded on AVEVA software, that enabled it to share insights in real-time and break down siloed thinking. To track emissions, the team built standardized monitoring models, using information feeds from on-site equipment. The resulting models enable teams to calculate and analyse emissions in real-time, sharing them via dashboards which are available to the whole team.
Using the same models, the teams also benefit from a complete view of equipment and processes. The models not only help TotalEnergies to measure emissions, but also to identify and prioritize new reductions opportunities. In just one use case, CO2 emissions were cut by 15% annually, within one site.

Yinson is a global Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) manufacturer with teams distributed across the world. The company’s portfolio covers the entire lifecycle of FPSOs from engineering into operations and finally decommissioning.
Yinson was facing the following challenges:
- Growing number and size of assets across the globe made it difficult to integrate and control data.
- Dispersed team and multi-disciplinary nature of processes hampered information-sharing and collaboration.
- The team needed to capture greenhouse gas emissions across operations in order to calculate baselines and meet regulatory requirements.
The company used AVEVA’s capabilities to help to gather and organize the increasing volumes of information that it needed to analyse.
By implementing AVEVA PI System, we were actually able to collect real-time data from the assets in operation.

In addition, the intuitive integration and sharing of information in the platform boosted collaboration across teams, from design and engineering to construction and completion.
Yinson has targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2030 and to be carbon neutral by 2050. AVEVA software is enabling both operational teams and corporate leaders to capture and review emissions performance. Best of all, the scalable approach means savings can be quickly deployed across new assets as they come onstream.
