Building Information Modeling (BIM) with AVEVA Solutions
Posted: July 24, 2024
When engineers turned to computers in architectural design and construction projects in the 1970s, they began to articulate the fundamental concepts of Building Information Modeling (BIM). Even 50 years ago, the potential of data and leveraging computational power to deliver smarter, more efficient projects and operational assets was on the minds of digital pioneers.
Today, organizations no longer treat developing a process for creating and managing information on construction projects throughout their whole lifecycle as an aspirational ideal. Rather, such a process has become a legislated necessity in a number of countries around the world—including the United Kingdom. Internationally, a series of standards (specifically ISO 19650 and 12006 standards) define BIM processes and associated data protocols.
At AVEVA, we have a long and proud history of pioneering data-driven, collaborative engineering, design and information management systems. Many of the principles at the heart of BIM were central to AVEVA long before BIM was introduced. It should come as no surprise that we wholeheartedly support BIM aims and values and have a range of technologies that can add value to your BIM projects.
As early pioneers of employing a BIM strategy across industry sectors, we have transformed decision-making by encouraging a dynamic digital counterpart to every physical asset, a true collaborative mode of working, and lean principles – ensuring that the digital asset doesn’t die in handover and value is reaped long after the digital seeds have been sown. We call this a data-centric, EPC 4.0 approach.
For us here at AVEVA, BIM is all about defining, building, and validating an information model that digitally describes a physical asset. We appreciate that a correctly defined and implemented BIM approach isn’t just software. It is instead a business process that, with the use of technology, we support. Rather than taking simply a document-centric, or even 3D approach to BIM projects, we move forward with a data-centric approach.
We offer a diverse set of capabilities within our products to support the implementation of a holistic BIM approach. One such example is our flagship 3D design solution, AVEVA™ E3D Design, which supports the import and export of IFC 2x3 and IFC4 file formats (industry standard, platform-neutral BIM file formats). It enables users to import intelligent services objects into leading building infrastructure packages.
