2024 - AVEVA World - Paris - Process Industries (Chemicals, MMM, Pulp/Paper)
Covestro’s path towards sustainable polymer materials production supported by AVEVA Process Simulation
Covestro is a global plastics manufacturer whose activities are focused on manufacturing high-tech polymer materials of superior quality. These materials are used for providing innovative solutions for various key industries such as automotive and transportation, construction, or electronics. Thus, our products are essentially used everywhere in modern life. Our vision is to create a climate neutral and more circular economy. Therefore, we as Covestro aim for net zero regarding our own emissions (scope 1) and emissions of external energy sources (scope 2) by 2035. By 2050, we aim to be fully climate neutral which also involves net zero emissions upstream and downstream our value chain (scope 3). To achieve this, we will focus more on alternative raw materials such as end-of-life products or bio-based feedstocks. This involves designing new processes and developing new technologies for innovative recycling. Compared to our traditional processes, other unit operations like solids processing, liquid/liquid extraction, crystallization, and other low-temperature unit operations are required. AVEVA Process Simulation is used as a tool for modeling these new processes and predicting a new process’ feasibility from environmental, technological, and economic standpoints. In our session, we would like to give some insights into the modelling challenges that we are facing with when designing novel processes.

Dominik Winterhalder
After studying Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration and graduating from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, Dominik started his career at Covestro in 2017 as a Process Engineer within Project Engineering department. He worked as a Lead Engineer for Energy Efficiency Projects as well as Greenfield and Brownfield projects for isocyanate plants. During that time he already used AVEVA Process Simulation extensively for e.g. simulating steam and condensate networks and pressure surge calculation. In 2024 he joined the group of Process Modeling & Conceptual Design further deepening his skills in Process Simulation.

Jannik Burre
Jannik Burre is a Process Engineer with a M.Sc. from RWTH Aachen University with a keen interest in modeling, simulation, and optimization of chemical plants. Mr. Burre started his Ph.D. at Process Systems Engineering (AVT.SVT) department at Aachener Verfahrenstechnik in the field of optimization-based process development. After a research visit in Singapore at Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education (CARES) on self-optimisation of processes using machine learning models, he finished his Ph.D. in March 2022. Since then, Mr. Burre has been working at Covestro in the group for Modelling and Conceptual Design on the development of processes for sustainable plastics production to contribute to a fully circular economy.
