Covestro, a polymers producer, is committed to sustainability. Given the essential nature of polymers in our everyday lives, the company wanted to innovate new ways to increase efficiencies and decrease its carbon footprint. Engineers used AVEVA™ Process Simulation to model new processes with the goal of creating less energy-intensive methods and saving time. They also used the process simulation software to predict the behavior of their new revolutionary green polymer—and determine how to best produce it at scale.
“We have a really close development partnership with AVEVA. This relationship is integral to our mission. Unlike some other solutions that are cold and static, together, we make AVEVA Process Simulation a living software that evolves as new needs arise.”
—Stefanie Gerlich, Process Simulation Expert, Covestro
Challenges
- Achieve net-zero scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2035 by creating less energy-intensive processes, using climate-neutral steam, and enabling recycling
- Engineer, test, commercialize, and scale recycled or bio-based polymers
- Model complex, evolving thermodynamic and solid processes to determine the technical and economic feasibility of circular polymers
Solution
By leveraging its existing AVEVA Process Simulation solution and the software’s bank of process models, Covestro can rapidly build and iterate models to assess the commercial and technical viability of new process candidates.
Results
- Simulating processes to move swiftly from concept to trial phase in green polymer production and establishing a viable approach to sustainable production
- Enabling a cost-effective way to test many different scenarios, while creating less energy-intensive chemical processes
- Saving time, reducing errors, and decreasing engineering effort thanks to an intuitive user interface and open architecture
